Procter & Gamble Goes 100% Paperless with 21 CFR Part 11 Electronic Logbook

Procter & Gamble is one of the world's largest consumer goods companies, manufacturing hundreds of trusted brands across personal care, household care, health, and baby products. At their GMP-regulated manufacturing facilities, paper-based logbooks were used extensively to record equipment usage, cleaning activities, environmental monitoring, and process parameters — creating thousands of paper records daily that needed to be filed, reviewed, and retained.

AmpleLogic's eLogbook platform was implemented to replace P&G's paper logbooks with a fully automated, 21 CFR Part 11-compliant electronic system. The deployment covered equipment logbooks, area logbooks, cleaning records, and environmental monitoring logs across multiple product lines. Each logbook type was configured with the appropriate fields, limits, and approval workflows for its specific use case.

The electronic system enforced real-time data entry, preventing backdating and ensuring contemporaneous recording — a key ALCOA+ principle that paper systems cannot reliably enforce. Automatic limit checks flagged out-of-range entries immediately, triggering deviation workflows when parameters exceeded acceptable thresholds. Electronic signatures replaced handwritten signatures with biometric-grade authentication.

P&G achieved fully paperless logbook operations at the implemented sites, eliminating physical filing systems and dramatically reducing the time required for record review. The searchable digital records made regulatory inspections significantly more efficient, with inspectors able to query specific time periods or equipment histories instantly rather than manually searching through paper archives.
