Sun Pharma Achieves Zero Data Integrity Issues by Replacing GMP Spreadsheets

Excel spreadsheets had become deeply embedded in Sun Pharma's quality and manufacturing operations over decades — used for everything from batch yield calculations and stability trending to equipment calibration tracking and APQR data compilation. While flexible and familiar, these spreadsheets represented significant data integrity risks: they lacked validation controls, had no audit trails, were prone to formula errors, and could not support electronic signatures required under 21 CFR Part 11.

AmpleLogic conducted a comprehensive spreadsheet risk assessment across Sun Pharma's facilities, cataloguing critical spreadsheet uses and prioritizing remediation based on GMP impact. For each high-risk spreadsheet application, a validated replacement within AmpleLogic's platform was configured — leveraging existing modules including APQR, stability management, calibration tracking, and LIMS integration where applicable.

The migration was carefully managed to ensure no disruption to operations, with parallel running periods allowing teams to validate that the electronic system produced equivalent results to the spreadsheets it replaced. User training addressed both the technical operation of the new systems and the regulatory rationale for eliminating uncontrolled spreadsheet use.

Sun Pharma successfully eliminated data integrity risks associated with critical quality spreadsheets, achieving zero spreadsheet-related data integrity observations in subsequent regulatory inspections. The exercise also delivered operational benefits — automated calculations replaced error-prone manual formulas, and the searchable, structured data in validated systems enabled analytics that the spreadsheet era had made impossible.
